The Intervision International Music Contest has established clear, detailed rules governing how a song must be performed live on stage. These regulations balance the requirement for genuine vocal talent with the use of modern production techniques and a limited number of live musicians.
Vocals
- Lead Vocals Must Be Live. The participating country's performer(s) are strictly required to deliver a live rendition of the Contest Song on stage.
- Lip-syncing for the lead vocalist is not permitted.
- The live vocal performance must be delivered to an instrumental recorded soundtrack that contains no lead vocals. The rules allow for creative choice regarding backing vocals. They may be performed live by a band on or off stage, or pre-recorded on the vocal backing track.
- The use of autotune and other modern voice devices and sound processing equipment is allowed, provided there is prior agreement with the Contest Organizer.
On Stage
- The total number of people on stage, which includes the main artist(s), backing singers, dancers, and any permitted live musicians, must not exceed six (6) people at any time.
- No more than two (2) musical instruments may be played live on stage. All other musical elements must come from the recorded backing track.
- The entry must have a "conceptual stage production" intended to reflect the culture and/or current trends of the participating country, incorporating imagery, ideas, and statements that represent the nation.
- The Contest Performance must be identical during all rehearsals and in the Contest Final to ensure fairness and quality control.
In essence, Intervision Song Contest seeks an authentic vocal performance delivered over a professionally produced song.
